Huk manufacturing partners are based in several international locations. However, all remaining business operations take place in Charleston, SC (ie: customer service, product design, marketing, etc.)
All of Huk performance apparel has 30-50 UPF ratings. The darker the material, the higher the rating.
The waterproof breath ability of gear can be described using two numbers. The first is in millimeters and is a measure of how waterproof a fabric is. In the case our 10,000 mm fabric, if you put a square tube with inner dimensions of 1 x 1 over a piece of our fabric, you could fill it with water to a height of 10,000 mm (32.8 feet) before water would begin to leak through.
The second number is a measure of how breathable the fabric is, and is expressed in terms of how many grams of water vapor can pass through a square meter of the fabric from the inside to the outside in a 24 hour period. In the case of our 5,000 g fabric, this would be 5,000 grams. Both processes have been tested on all of our rain gear.
This particular jacket material is manufactured to hold up to 10,000mm of water before seeping through and allows 5,000 grams of water vapor to pass from the inside to the outside of the jacket in a 24 hour period. This ensures both breath ability as well as water protection.
The truth is that all outerwear designed for active water sports has various degrees of waterproof levels, but will eventually leak given enough water, time and pressure. A rubber raincoat is completely waterproof, and may be the ideal garment for standing in a downpour, but if you tried to be active in it, youd be wet in no time from your own perspiration. The trick is to balance protection from rain on the outside with the ability to let water vapor (warm perspiration) escape from the inside.
Washing your gear on a Normal Setting, with a powdered detergent in cold water is best. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners and do not dry clean. We recommend washing your gear separately from any garments that have velcro, zippers, or any other hardware that may snag the fabric of your Huk gear. Tumble dry low or hang dry for best results.
